This is just a quick heads-up to those of you who use the Blogger platform for your book-blogging. I suspect that there may still be something going on with the way the software is handling/not-handling comments made by readers of the blogs.
I don't know how to tell for sure, but I do know that I've left comments on three or four Blogger-platformed blogs in the last few days that never end up being posted as intended despite being tagged for "approval" by the blog owners. It's become a frustrating problem because "conversation" is the thing I enjoy most about blogging, and I am finding it impossible to comment on some blogs.
Are any of you noticing the same thing? I'm going to go out on a limb and suggest that if you are moderating your comments that you allow open comments to appear on postings that are less than 10 days old. It's the older ones that attract most of the spam because spammers hope that we aren't paying attention to those anymore. I've got my comment moderation set that way and only very occasionally does a spammer comment to a newer post (and now I'm hoping that all the idiot spammers out there never actually read this post).
And now...hopefully everyone interested will actually be able to comment here.
Fingers crossed this problem gets fixed, because that is annoying when your comments never go through. I have mine set up similar to yours...new post comments go through automatically, anything over two weeks old I have to approve.
ReplyDeleteI wonder if we even have a way to know that the comments have been left for us, or if they are as invisible to us as they are to those who left them.
DeleteAs you know, I had similar problems last week, although I haven't noticed anything amiss in the last few days. However, obviously, some of the problems are continuing. Your fix may be a viable one.
ReplyDeleteJeane mentioned down below that on her blog you have to click on the individual posting in order to tell that comments have been posted there; that the notification doesn't show up if you just open on her blog-header. I thought I'd tried that before, but I do see one of the "missing" comments now that I wondered about this morning and yesterday. All very confusing.
DeleteI hadn't noticed any issues yet- thanks for the heads-up! sounds very annoying to say the least.
ReplyDeleteThanks for your comment pertaining this issue on the other post of mine that you commented on today. I'm not at all sure what is going on...as you can tell.
DeleteI hadn't noticed a problem either but I haven't posted since Monday and have had a busy week. To be honest I didn't know you could set comment moderation like that. I don't even have moderation enabled as I'm not a fan but will take a look at it.
ReplyDeleteYours is not one of the blogs I've had issues with, Cath.
DeleteI have my comment moderation set that way so that I get notified when a comment comes in on an older blog. About 75% of the comments that come in on old posts are spam, and this way I can delete them before anyone has to see them but me. I do have one five-year-old post, though, that is still getting comments from people who join the conversation even now. Being set up this way makes sure I won't miss welcoming their comments and responding if necessary.
No problems here to my knowledge and mine ic currently set up to moderate all. I think I've seen and responded to your comments on a pretty regular basis Sam. Please let me know if that isn't the case.
ReplyDeleteDiane, I've not noticed the problem with your blog either. There were four this morning that I am pretty sure had issues...and three of them still do. I just have a feeling it's something to do with the options as to how we moderate comments on Blogger. The problem will probably solve itself...or be solved by Blogger with no explanation. That's usually the case with these guys.
DeleteI haven't noticed any problem. I have my comment moderation set up similar to yours. The one thing I did notice was that I'd "checked the box" to have Blogger email me notification of any comments made on old posts and somehow that directive got lost. I've since re-checked the box and haven't had any problems. (Touch wood.)
ReplyDeleteI'm still having a problem commenting on one blog but I've notified him and he's working on the problem from his end. It looks like something in his particular set-up that is not allowing comments to get through even so that he can approve them or not.
DeleteI haven't noticed any problems with comments not showing up. However, my comment moderation screen now has a slightly different setup than it did a week ago. It's more confusing, so I can see how a blogger could EASILY delete comments on accident.
ReplyDeleteI've accidentally deleted the same person's comments two different times, Susan. I sloppily clicked on the delete icon rather than on the approve icon, and they were gone before I knew it. Sort of like leaving your keys inside your car and realizing it the instant the door clicks shut.
