"Curbside Larry" is pushing the library's curbside pickup service in the manner of the kind of used car salesman all of us have seen on our televisions at one time or another. I used to think that these guys only appeared on small-town televisions stations (because I grew up in one of those), but there are similar ads on Houston television even now.
So, if you want a good book-nerdish kind of laugh today, meet "Curbside Larry."

:D That's hilarious!
ReplyDeleteHe's certainly got the sales patter down, doesn't he?
DeleteSadly my pc won't play Twitter videos... it's because I'm still running XP I think. I'll try to remember to stop by here on my tablet tomorrow and watch.
ReplyDeleteWell, Cath, XP makes you about as Windows old-school as anyone I know right now. LOL But as I recall, XP was one of the most reliable Windows operating systems there ever was, so hang on to it as long as you can.
DeleteI plan to, Sam. I got this pc in 2007, Windows 7 had just arrived but there was an option to have XP still if you wanted, so I did. I had 7 on my laptop and was never keen so am happy to still have XP though at some stage I will have to move up to 10 I know. My poor pc is after all getting a bit ancient now.
DeleteI wonder if Microsoft supports that operating system anymore, Cath. If not, it might cause some security issues for you at some point. Be careful.
DeleteLOL too funny. I'm using curbside pick up for the second time later today. It worded beautifully the first time and I even got a Book Page magazine foe August tucked in my brown paper bag :) Happy Day
ReplyDeleteI haven't actually used the service yet, Diane, but old Larry makes me want to give it a try. I drove past Barnes & Noble in the parking lot this morning and saw there were about 20 cars parked there and that people were leaving as I passed the front of the store. I"m not sure what precautions are being taken...for instance, do they quarantine a book for 72 hours every time someone picks it up from the shelf? How in the world would they even know?
Delete:) Sounds like a good plan libraries to keep current and vital!
ReplyDeleteI'm really happy having this branch only four miles from my house, Jen. Ir's relatively new, and the staff is wonderful. Counting the years I used the old building, I've been borrowing books from this renamed library for 42 years.
DeleteThat was funny. I'm going to start using curbisde pickup here, too. Still fine reading from my own private collection, but my kids are antsy for some new material themselves.
ReplyDeleteI'm fairly confident that the libraries are doing it right...not nearly as confident that bookstores can meet the standards, though, and that kind of breaks my heart.
DeleteEvery library should have a Curbside Larry. Wow, what a great-looking library that is! So big!
ReplyDeletePat, the library is in a fairly new, built-to-purpose, two-story building that suffered significant damage during our last major hurricane. They were shut down for months after that, and lost the entire children's library of thousands of books.
DeleteIt's all been redone now, and the children's library is probably better than ever. The first floor also includes a large section on new releases, the check-out area, and the processing area for returned books.
The second floor has all the adult books, a large computer section, lots of tables and chairs, meeting rooms, at least one classroom, and information area, and hundreds of movies and audiobooks.
I love the place!
That's so funny! I continued to use curbside pickup at our FL library even after they reopened. Received notice today that they're back to curbside only again... the building is closed to the public.
ReplyDeleteI still enjoy the video, JoAnn. It reminds me so much of all of those car-huskers I use to see on TV ads when I was a kid that it's amazing. Our library never has opened up the doors to patrons so far, and since we are in one of the counties with the highest number of cases in the whole country, I doubt that they will anytime soon.
DeleteHilarious! Libraries have to get creative these days, don't they? I hope Curbside Larry's ads help get lots of people to the library.
ReplyDeleteIt's gotten the library a lot of attention all over the state because Texas Monthly did a short piece on him and his video. We really do have a great local library - as really hit home to me when it was shut down after a hurricane for several months and I had to use a different branch of the system.
