Status Check: Lack of Sleep Makes Me Whiny

It always feels a bit awkward to do these "personal posts," but I don't have the energy, or more importantly, the time to do much more at the moment. I am five months from retirement, so things should be easing up at the office for me - but just the opposite is happening because my key employee gave the company her two-week notice 12 days ago. That has meant a lot of scrambling to get someone in place soon enough to have her do some training and orientation work before she heads out the door. And, that has translated into longer hours for me - mainly on the front end of the day even though I am almost always at my desk by 6:20 a.m. anyway.

Then, yesterday morning about ten I received a phone call from the assisted living facility my father has lived in for the past two years saying that they found him on the floor of his unit.  So the last two days have seen me spread pretty thinly, as I try to find time to be at the hospital with him for the battery of tests he is undergoing, at the office during this critical handover week, and to get a little sleep at the end of the day.  All of that has left me constantly tired and drowsy, so writing anything of substance or interest is beyond me at the moment.

I just wanted to check in with the regulars so that I didn't give the impression that I am losing interest in Book Chase after 6 1/2 years.  As if...and the good news for me is that I am reading lots of pages while waiting for my father to return from tests and while he naps.  I am, however, starting to wonder if much is really sinking in, and hoping to be back to a normal schedule very soon.

  3. Thanks for the kind words, y'all. The situation with my father grew more frustrating today when he was released by the hospital with no real understanding of what caused him to pass out in the first place. Within two hours of being home, he starting feeling faint again because his blood sugar had dropped to the mid-60s level. Despite me telling doctors and nurses at least a dozen times that I suspected this to be the problem, they pretty much ignored me because his hospital diet was keeping his blood sugar in the 110-125 range consistent;y. Now we have to see another doctor in the morning and are back to square one. Such is life.

  5. Oh Sam, so sorry about your father. I hope he is doing ok. And work being hectic on top of it. Yikes! but wow, you will get to retire soon! That is so awesome. Hang in there!

  7. Thanks again, guys. He had some dizziness again this morning but just started new medication yesterday, so they are still tweaking the dosage. Hoping that he will be back to "normal for 90-year-olds" soon. He is in much better spirits now that something positive is being tried rather than just all that testing he's undergone.

  8. So sorry to hear about all of this and the stress it is causing you. From the comments, it seems like your dad is doing better. My dad is 88 and I know how these things go. We never really counted on all of the care we would need to give our parents as they and we got older.

  9. Sounds like you are very familiar with the health issues of the extreme elderly among us, Kathleen. I hope your dad continues to do well.
