Happy Tax Day to My Fellow Patriotic Americans

Just before I push the button that will finalize my 2008 Federal Income Tax return, I want to thank all the other patriotic Americans out there who are doing the same - or have already done so. Since our somewhat comical Vice-President links paying taxes with true patriotism and "stepping up to the plate," I think we should be proud of ourselves today.

To especially make you proud of being even more patriotic than the average American, based on Biden's definition of the word, here's something from Reason.TV that puts it all into perspective. I'll bet you didn't realize just how patriotic you and your family are until you saw this:

(I don't mean to offend anyone...well, other than VP Joe, that is - just have to laugh a little or I'm going to end up with a rather soggy check to the IRS.)

  1. Yeah, we were patriotic a couple of months ago. They sure like taking our money and spending it but you never hear them talking about their money:( (or ways they will cut spending)

  2. You are "a great American," Melanie - and so is your husband. Joe appreciates you (as do I). :-)

  3. Joe Biden is an idiot and an embarrassment to this country. His latest lie about being alone in the Oval Office with Bush and saying something clever.....Ye gods.

I have never agreed with anything Karl Rove said, but when he called Biden a "serial exaggerator"--well, maybe he was being too polite.

  4. My thought as I was struggling through my tax mess with the help of software is that why do our taxes have to be so complicated? Even with the aid of my software and all the questions it asked me I still feel like I could have screwed up half a dozen things. If I get audited, my defense will be that I really couldn't make heads or tails of the whole tax mess.

  5. Press release from The White House:

The Vice President and Dr. Jill Biden Release 2008 Income Tax Returns

Today, the Vice President and Dr. Jill Biden released their 2008 federal and state income tax returns. He and Dr. Biden filed their income tax returns jointly and reported an adjusted gross income of $269,256 and an after-tax income of $183,315. The family’s primary sources of income were salaries from the United States Senate, Widener University, Delaware Technical & Community College, as well as royalties from the audio rights to the Vice President’s book. The Bidens paid $46,952 in federal income taxes; $11,164 in Delaware state income taxes; and donated $1,885 to charity. The charitable donations claimed by the Bidens on their tax returns are not the sum of their annual contributions to charity. They donate to their church, and they contribute to their favorite causes with their time, as well as their checkbooks.

yeah, right, sure...you can bet your bippy that if Biden had contributed more than a paltry $1885 to charity, it would have been listed as a deduction!

  6. As an American living in Canada, I was thoroughly concerned by the lack of guidance for people who are married to a citizen in another country. Do I check that he's claiming me as a dependent? Do they care that he's declaring me for another country's taxes? And no matter how I filled out the form, I kept coming up with me getting hundreds in a credit, or owing money--even though I made $50 in interest last year and that's it.

Finally, I found the number for Americans in Canada to call (well hidden, may I add--I found IRS numbers for Jamaica and Frankfurt, Germany first) and explained the situation to the IRS person, who verified that I didn't even need to file this year. Yay!

  7. JoAnn, Biden will provide lots of material to the Saturday Night Live clowns for the next four years, no doubt.

I had heard that charity percentage of Biden's before - He's full of hot air and I don't think he's smart enough to keep all of his lies straight. An incompetent liar is fun to watch, though.

  8. Alissa, if that excuse is good enough for Turbo-Tax Tim Geitner, it should be good enough for the rest of us, IMO. :-)

  9. Cool, Jena.

Heck, I'm a CPA and I refuse to do individual tax returns because how much time it takes to keep up with all the changes, exceptions, giveaways, and special favors in the code.

Turbo-Tax is my software of choice this time of year.
