Poll Update

My July 27 poll asking which one writer from the selected group is most likely to still be in print in 100 years turned out almost exactly the way I thought it probably would. Maybe I should have avoided placing JK Rowling in the list of choices so close to the release of Harry Potter the 7th because so many readers were still excited by the new book.

But I can't really quarrel with the results since the two that I see as most likely to survive are leading the poll at present: JK Rowling with 20 votes and Stephen King with 13. No one else is even in the race, in fact. My hunch is that both will survive to some limited degree and that if Rowling's work does, indeed, survive for the next century that the whole series will be in print.

Anyway, I had fun with the poll and I thank you for voting.

  1. Yeah, I think they'll both be remembered, but I could only vote for one, so I picked King. I think.

  2. I picked King as the most likely, but I'm convinced that both will be in print into the next century. Now, whether anyone bothers to read them is a whole other question.

  3. I guess I'm the only one who thinks Rowling won't be popular several generations from now, unless she writes more books that prove to be just as popular. Otherwise, she's just a one-trick pony. If she doesn't continue to write, I think Harry Potter will be remembered as a movie more than a book. And I think the movies will keep the books in print.

  4. I agree, Annie, that the movies will have a lot to do with keeping Rowling in print. I think that some of the luster is going to wear off of the writing itself as people step away from the hype in a few years. But it's hard to argue with the best selling series of all time, so that will probably keep her in print for many decades to come.

  5. Rowling is 99% hype. I am just staggered at the number of adult readers she has.
I would advise parents to introduce their kids to the work of C S Lewis, the 'Chronicles Of Narnia' are far superior to Potter.

  6. My sample of her writing and this particular story line showed me it wasn't for me either, Nick, but she sure has a lot of very sincere adult fans who seem to really enjoy her. In fact, I saw as many adults as children and teens buying it that first night.

  7. I vote for King, more original and fashinating than Rowling
