On the Road Again: Road Trip 2021

My Hero: Willie Nelson
King of the Road Trip

I'm leaving in the morning with my 19-year-old grandson beside me on a much anticipated road trip...the first in just over two years. You never know how many opportunities are left to spend this kind of time with a grandchild, so I'm putting aside my uneasiness and going ahead with the trip. We are going to be extra cautious, though, as you would know if you saw the number of cleaning and sanitizing items, masks, etc. we are packing along with us.

So, we'll be taking it one day at a time, and as long as we both feel comfortable being out on the road, we will continue on - hopefully, for at least two weeks. The plan is literally to wander around New Mexico, Arizona, Utah, Nevada, Idaho, Montana, North Dakota, South Dakota, and Nebraska to see what we stumble upon. I'm a stickler for not over-planning a road trip (well, not planning it at all is closer to the truth) so we may not make all of these states, depending on what we find to take up our days - or what the COVID conditions are in some of the states on the list.

This means that my blogging will be sporadic, at best, through the end of July and maybe into early August - as will my reading. I do plan to check in with a post or two when decent WiFi is available, though, and who knows what I'll have to say? Certainly, not me.

  1. Happy road-tripping!!! I'm a little jealous; but the temps have been so hot out here in the West I'm also pretty content to stay inside with the AC. If you hit Southern Utah and have never been to Hovenweep, it's an amazing place to check out. I hope you have a wonderful time with your grandson. :D

    1. Thanks, Lark, I'll keep Hovenweep in mind. There's a good chance that we will get within striking distance of it looks like. It looks like it may still be partially restricted due to COVID, but the roads through there are still open.

    1. Thanks, Cath. We'll be hitting the road early in the morning...now I need to see if I can get some sleep. I don't usually manage much sleep the night before beginning a long trip like this one, though.

    1. It will definitely be a leisurely pace that we take...as few interstate and major highways as possible. I enjoy visiting small towns and remembering how simple everything used to be...but probably never really was.

  4. How special - this sounds like a great experience for both of you. I've been to NM several times and especially enjoyed Santa Fe and Old Town Albuquerque. Have fun!

    1. He's a teenager, Diane, so he's excited about visiting Clovis where Buddy Holly recorded and then heading down to Roswell and Area 51. I'll probably be seeing some things on this trip I would have passed over without his company.

    1. Thanks, Jen. We're both excited about starting out bright and early tomorrow. It will be one day at a time, but as long as we feel relatively safe, we'll keep going.

    1. Very true, Terra. This is one of those rare opportunities to create some memories for both of us. We enjoy lots of the same things but there are enough differences that this should be a learning experience for both of us. :-)

  9. Happy and safe travels. The areas you plan to visit are home to some of my favorite trips of past years. I don't know when or if I'll be able to make those trips again so I will live vicariously through you.

  11. How fun! Arizona is HOT and miserable right now, but at least you can always find air conditioning and a swimming pool. Oh yeah, and we do have a large canyon people seem to enjoy looking at :) Enjoy your trip!
