Silent in the Grave
Lady Julia Grey may have married into a family even more wealthy than her own, may have lived a sheltered life surrounded by servants, and may have been blind to the harsh world outside her front door but she carried the genes of her own eccentric family as well. The woman certainly had a sense of humor, and as first-person-narrator of Silent in the Grave she displays it immediately in the book’s opening lines: “To say that I met Nicholas Brisbane over my husband’s dead body is not entirely accurate. Edward, it should be noted, was still twitching on the floor.”
I have thius book here to read, and I am really looking forward to it!
ReplyDeleteHave to say...that cover isn't all that great!
oh, curses. Another book that looks really good. Do you know anywhere I can buy a few extra weeks?
ReplyDeleteI really liked this one last year and eagerly awaited the next in the series. I just finished Silent in the Sanctuary, and enjoyed it, but not as much as the first one.
ReplyDeleteMarg, I read from an Advance Reader's Copy of the book and that's the cover it has...do you have an ARC or did they use that cover on retail copies, also? I've seen another copy that's a little more appropriate for the book.
ReplyDeleteCarrie, if you find someone selling extra free time for the masses, please give them my website address and tell them I'm in the market for a few hours per day, too. I just can't read fast enough to keep up with the distraction of all those work hours. :-)
ReplyDeleteI've seen other comments about the second book not being as enjoyable as the first, Jenclair. I don't have a copy but I'll pick it up if I see it someplace...bookstore or library, whichever happens first, because I'm curious now as to why folks are saying that.
ReplyDeleteFrom what I can tell that is the UK paperback cover. The hardback cover is much better.
ReplyDeleteYou're probably right, Marg...my ARC did come from London.
ReplyDeleteI actually enjoyed this book a lot. The sequel, however, wasn't quite as good... but still I'm anticipating the publication of the third Lady Julia Grey at the beginning of next year. From what Deanna Raybourn posts on her blog, it seems as though she puts a lot of time and effort into her research, and it shows in her novels. And, of course, I'm a sucker for anything Victorian :).
ReplyDeleteKatherine, I haven't seen the sequel but I've heard similar comments from others. That's a bit disappointing.
