The Collectors
Although I’ve been aware of David Baldacci’s books for several years, The Collectors is my first real exposure to his writing. I first saw his name on a book, if I remember correctly, when former President Bill Clinton was walking across the White House lawn on his way to his helicopter with one of Baldacci’s books under his arm. But for some reason, it’s taken me almost the whole length of George Bush’s presidency to get around to reading Baldacci. It’s too bad that my lucky streak finally ran out because, if The Collectors is representative of Baldacci’s work, I should have waited through the presidencies of at least a couple of Bush successors before forcing myself all the way through a 500-page Baldacci book.
I have a Baldacci novel that CanadaBoy loaned me called Wish You Well. Now I don't know if I want to read it.
ReplyDeleteBybee, I know that Baldacci has legions of fans out there and I'm really hoping that this was just a poor effort for him and that it doesn't represent the norm.
ReplyDeleteI kept thinking that it would surely get better as I got more into the characters, but it actually got worse. If it was intended to be a farce, that's one thing, but as a thriller it is a complete failure, IMO.
I was attracted to it because of the cover and the way that a large part of the action takes place in the Library of Congress rare books room...not enough, however, to make this worth the time I wasted on it.
I've had Baldacci on my list for quite a while too and have never gotten around to reading anything by him. However, I was told that his earlier works are better that his latest ones.
ReplyDeleteWow, what a coincidence, I have also just read The Collectors following a write-up on Dovegreyreader's blog. It was my first Baldacci and definately my last. Apart from the cardboard cut-out characters and the implausibility of the plots, the writing was execrable.
ReplyDeleteI am cursed with one of those "I've started so I'll finish" attitudes so I struggled on the the bitter end.
Ah well. Sounds like this guy's writing would drive me a bit nuts, so I'll skip this one. Thanks for the warning!
ReplyDeleteI've heard the same, Amy, although I have to say that it really ticks me off when "big name" authors build a reputation and then get sloppy or lazy with their work and coast on that rep.
ReplyDeleteInteresting timing, but kind of nice to see that we agree on the lack of quality here, herschellian.
ReplyDeleteIf you try another of his, let me know what you think, heather. At this point, I'm not even tempted to see what he built his reputation on but you might change my mind.
ReplyDeletei also tend to finish what i have started. it was a struggle to finish.
ReplyDeleteI'm relieved to see so many others thought it was as bad as I felt it to be. I wonder how Book 3 in the series is selling?
