I found with both boys that it took them longer to get into reading because for such a long time their interests were far more sophisticated than their abilities. Then we found Captain Underpants, and Scieszka's work, as well as other "gross-out" books like...wait for it..."Zombie Butts from Uranus". Boys seem to be getting the short end of the stick in early education these days. I honestly think that the pendulum swung to for in an effort to make girls feel "equal" and good about themselves. Now it's the little boys who are often made to feel like little villains because they have different tastes in reading, games, movies, etc.Sam https://www.blogger.com/profile/17448913705757509608noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-38656633.post-1261164022235212012008-09-28T09:49:00.000-05:002008-09-28T09:49:00.000-05:00Frances, what you say is similar to what my daught...Frances, what you say is similar to what my daughters tell me. One teaches fourth grade, the other teaches first grade, and they have noticed the differences in reading habits and attitudes between boys and girls of those ages. I'm glad to hear that the Scieszka program works so well. It's new to me but I'm going to recommend it to both my daughters as something that might help them in the Sam https://www.blogger.com/profile/17448913705757509608noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-38656633.post-24651293283623942752008-09-28T07:47:00.000-05:002008-09-28T07:47:00.000-05:00My husband and I also raised two girls, and I have...My husband and I also raised two girls, and I have been fascinated with the different way my grandson approached everything. Last year, I started a Scieszka based Guys Read book club that has been a great success. Sometimes we forget that educators are predominantly women and the curriculum taught in most schools as well the the testing standards are also set by women.
