Your Home Library

I see that Kimbooktu.com has a neat little project going at the moment that reminds me of the discussion that we had here a while back about trying to read titles of the books that show up over the shoulders of people whose pictures we see in magazines and newspapers.

The project is called Your Home Library and it asks readers to email a picture of their home libraries to the site with a few words of description. The pictures and descriptions are then posted for all to see and admire. Take a look. It's a fun idea and offers some great ideas about shelving books and clearly shows that we all seem to be up against the same main problem: too many books for our shelves. So far, there are pictures of 12 home libraries from all over the world.

  2. Fantastic! I'm going to do it! My study is curently half catalogued on Library Thing (that half is neat), and the other half.....

  3. I saw this at kimbooktu, too. I wanted to submit a picture, but my books are so spread out all over the house that it was actually daunting, so I didn't do it.

  4. Hey, thanks, Jill. I can't manage a picture of that whole wall but those are, indeed, my bookshelves. They are in three sections of seven shelves each and hold something over 800 of my books.

When we built this house 8 years ago, that wall was one of my main priorities. Now I wish I'd done the same on one other, shorter, wall in the room.

  5. I'll look forward to seeing (and browsing) your library, Sally. You take such good photos that I expect it to be an interesting shot.

  6. I have a similar problem with the other 400+ books that are in the house, Gentle Reader...in closets of several rooms because I don't have enough shelf space or an appropriate spot to add more shelving other than inside closets.

  9. Thanks, bybee. I love sitting in this room and being surrounded by books. That was something I had been looking forward to for a long, long time.

  11. Hi All!

Is does not matter if your library does not fit on the picture. As you can see, some of the library owners have just send in a picture of one part. You can describe the rest.

Come on! Send me your pictures. It will be fun!

(Sam, could you please send me a larger picture of that wonderfull wall of yours? I would LOVE to put it on the site!)

  12. Hi, Kim. I'll get that picture to you pretty quickly. There's no way that I can get a proper picture of the whole thing, but this one represents about 80% of the shelves on that wall anyway.

I see that you're picking up quite a few new libraries in recent days. I love that idea.

  13. Hi Sam,

By larger, I do not mean a picture that captures the whole lot. That's impossible.

I meant larger in pixels. You can send me the same photo if you like. As long as it is 500 pixels wide. Looking forward to it ánd your short description!
